Day Nineteen: Up to the Mountain 06.26

This morning we decided to get up at half past six, a time we would never choose to get up in the summer back home if we had the choice, so that we could climb a bit of the small mountain behind the compound. It was beautiful, we followed these tiny paths threw the trees and flowers and beautiful countryside. We only went about halfway, because the path became too steep, but we took some wonderful pictures, then sat and watched the mist clear.

We were back at the compound by nine, and I showered and changed for church. Mr. Hasan came to escort me to the church, which was very large and beautiful. Girls and boys sit on opposite sides, so I couldn’t sit with Mr. Hasan, but he introduced me to some of the sisters at the church, so I sat with them. There were fifteen deacons/priests/bishops there because a newly ordained bishop from Bo was visiting to celebrate with us. The mass was quite long, but very good. Afterward Mr. Hasan showed me the school that the sisters run for the deaf, which really surprised me.

After a short walk to the ClubHouse Bar to see if the rest of my companions had decided to go there for lunch and finding they weren’t there, I took a motorbike back to the compound and mostly just hung out and read in the afternoon.

Dr. Erdi heard from one of her contacts about what they thought about the infant with the tumor. He said he was fairly certain that it’s a germ cell tumor that should be removed, and can very possibly be removed successfully. He gave some pointers on where to cut, and said that the coccyx should be removed because he’s fairly certain that’s where it’s coming from.

For dinner we went to the ClubHouse since we ended up not going last night after all. We had the quickest service yet, I think it was because we came just before all the Peace Corps kids started showing up, which slows things down in the kitchen. I had a cheese pizza, and was glad that it was a fairly large size for an individual pizza, and I ate the whole thing. Now we’re just relaxing and watching a movie.

This post is dedicated to the child that died of typhoid in children’s ward today.
