Day Thirty-one: Showing the New Kids the Ropes 07.08

Today I got up as normal and went to breakfast, followed by three very tired girls and one very tired boy. I hadn’t realized it last night, but all of John’s luggage was left in Brussels on accident by the airline. Unfortunately there’s not a lot we can do to get it, since we’ve been having trouble getting a hold of the airline, and even if we did get them to send it to Freetown, it would be very expensive to make the extra time down to get them.

We all went to Morning Handover and Dr. Erdi introduced the new students. Then we went around on a tour of the place, ending with the TFC. Once we were down at the TFC we sort of stood there talking about different stuff and they kept asking me questions about what goes on here. By the time we were finished, it was 11h00. Ashley and Daniel went to the Under-Fives clinic to help Musa, and Taylor and I came back to the house to work on my research and nap. I worked, Taylor napped, haha.

After a quickly lunch, Daniel and Ashley came back from TFC and had lunch and they started asking questions again and wanted to see what I’ve gotten so far. I showed them and talked with them until almost 14h00, and then Taylor, Daniel and I went back to the hospital and took a tour of the wards. While we were out we stopped in the maternity ward to ask if anyone was in labor, and they said that one woman was in labor but wasn’t progressing so she was going to have a C-section later that day. In the late afternoon I took a nap, and around 17h00 or so the power went on so we rushed over to watch. When we got there, Dr. ABD looked at me and said, “Ali!!! You need to scrub in!” so I got to scrub in on a C-Section!!! I was so excited, because C-sections are harder and you have to have confidence in your assistant, and the assistant should know the steps pretty well. I had been asking him about C-Sections a lot, but I never thought he would ask me to scrub in so soon! It went really well, and I was able to help cut the umbilical cord!

After a wonderful dinner we watched Elf. It wasn’t very fitting of the warm weather, but oh well. Steve showed up partway through the movie and finished it with us, then asked us over to his place to get in the pool. We all went over to his place and got in the pool and had a great time talking and having drinks, then we went inside and had coffee and sat around talking until about 2h00.

This post is dedicated to the woman in female ward who died during the night. She was admitted yesterday but didn’t respond to treatment.
