Day Thirty-three: Another Lazy Day 07.10

Early this morning the power came on around 8h00, and we considered going to watch, but I suspected that Dr. Erdi would be tired and grumpy from being called so much in such a short period of time, so we decided to sleep some more.

Around 11h00, Dr. Erdi came back and we asked what happened. She said that the government hospital had sent over a C-section because their surgeon was out. The C-section was necessary because the baby was too big to fit through the pelvis. The mother was fine, but the baby died shortly after delivery.

We hung out most of the afternoon, playing euchre and talking, until dinnertime when Dr. Erdi suggested that we get ourselves over to the Clubhouse Bar to have dinner. All the cars were in use, so we decided to take the “public transport,” or the motorbikes. Luckily I had advised that everyone trade one of their 10,000 Le bills for 1,000 and 2,000 Le bills so that they could pay the motorbike drivers. Some of the girls were scared when we started, but as soon as we started riding they started having fun.

We got to the Clubhouse just fine, and we going to sit outside for dinner, and had just ordered drinks when it started raining so we moved inside. We ordered, and almost immediately Dr. Erdi got a call from the hospital requesting her to come back. She had to leave us, so we told her that we would bring her food home in a box if need be, and that we would find our way home on motorbikes as soon as we were finished.

While at the Clubhouse, we watched woman’s soccer, USA vs. Brazil, and ate our pizza. USA won in a shoot-out after time ran out. The pizza was great, and afterward we took motorbikes back to the compound. As soon as we got back and were walking in, Dr. Erdi was driving out to come meet up with us. We decided to watch Hercules before calling it a night, but unfortunately Dr. Erdi couldn’t join us because she had to see patients again.

This post is dedicated to the woman who lost her baby this morning.
